Biography

Dr Edward Caine is a pianist, musical director, conductor, and composer whose work is grounded in rehearsal, collaboration, and live performance.

Based in the West Midlands, he works extensively across musical theatre, choral music, and contemporary performance. His practice is shaped by the realities of the rehearsal room: as a pianist and répétiteur, he works closely with singers and ensembles, supporting the development of performances from first rehearsal through to the stage. As a musical director and conductor, he has led a wide range of productions and concerts, from large-scale choral repertoire to musical theatre, combining clarity of direction with a detailed understanding of ensemble sound and vocal practice.

Originally trained as a pianist, he developed his career through extensive freelance work as an accompanist, rehearsal musician, and musical director, working across theatre productions, choirs, and educational contexts. This practical experience continues to underpin his approach, placing performance and collaboration at the centre of his work.

Alongside this, he maintains a substantial compositional practice. His work explores voice, text, and musical texture, often drawing on historical and found material which is re-voiced and transformed through performance. His music has been performed across the UK and internationally, including at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and by ensembles including Opera North and Ex Cathedra, with broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and Sky Arts.

He studied music at Durham University before completing a PhD in composition at the University of York under Roger Marsh. During this time, he was closely involved in the UK contemporary music scene, and worked as Projects Manager for Late Music in York, curating concert series and supporting new work by emerging composers.

Alongside his artistic practice, he has worked as a teacher, arranger, and arts professional, including roles supporting organisations such as Armonico Consort and Contemporary Music for All, and as a Quality Assessor for Arts Council England.
