Arranging & Composing for Schools

His work is characterised by detailed, practical orchestration and a strong understanding of student performers, enabling ambitious repertoire to be realised in educational settings. He regularly writes for combinations of voices, wind band, and full school orchestra, producing arrangements that are both musically engaging and achievable in rehearsal.

Recent projects include substantial arrangements and compositions for Winterfold House School, including:

  • Winterfold School Song (2023) — original composition for voices and orchestra
  • James Bond Medley (2024) — large-scale work for choir and orchestra
  • Arrangements of works by artists including Blur, The Specials, Electric Light Orchestra, Sam Ryder, Coldplay, Toto, ABBA, Gary Barlow, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z
  • Re-workings of classical repertoire, including Parry’s Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, adapted for school ensemble

These projects involve writing for varied forces, often combining choir (SSA or SATB) with wind, brass, rhythm section, and strings, and require careful balancing of texture, range, and technical demand. Edward’s arrangements are designed to be effective in performance while remaining sensitive to the abilities and confidence of young musicians.

Alongside this, he works closely with teachers and directors to develop material that fits specific performances, themes, and ensembles, ensuring that each project is tailored to its context and performers.
