Biography
Edward Caine MA was brought up in the Highlands of Scotland and currently resides in York, UK. He began auto-didactically with the piano at age 14 and progressed quickly onto composition. In 2000-2003 he studied Music at Durham University and composition under Paul Archbold. After Durham he moved to York and studied composition with Prof. Roger Marsh, completing a Masters Degree in 2006. He is now doing a PhD part time at York University with Roger Marsh. His music has been performed and workshopped by the Kreutzer Quartet, Ensemble Gemini, YoMAMA choir, Trio Atem, Uncloistered, Black Hair Ensemble and Chimera across the UK and in Italy, including the York Minster and the Late Music Festival.
Apart from composition, Edward follows an active life as a performer, accompanist, conductor, organiser, tutor, graphic designer and programmer. As Vanbrugh College Music Tutor he is responsible for arranging and conducting musical ensembles for the academic community at the University of York. As Assistant Administrator for the Late Music Festival (www.latemusicfestival.org.uk) he is responsible for programming concerts, spearheading new initiatives, designing publicity, programming and maintaining the website, stage management, recording, technician duties and directing the festival's new venture Late Music Publications (www.latemusicfestival.org.uk/publishing/) on which you can find some of his scores. As a performer Edd is used to a wide range of styles and pieces, playing Jazz piano gigs, singing in choirs and stage productions, conducting choirs and new music ensembles, playing 'cello and accompanying dance classes and recitals.
Recently, Edward was made an SPNM shortlist composer (details) and will be presenting a paper in Huddersfield at the "Old and New?" conference in April based around the importance of accoustic sonority and found material in Sciarrino's Luci Mi Traditrici and his own Madrigali in 12 parts for 3 Trombones.
